Lyrics: Drinking a French red from Bordeaux in your cut glass '99 vintage, what a year, a touch of class You're so sophisticated, I wish I could be just like you. Well you've got all the classics on your shelf, lined up against your wall Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, Hardy, but you've never read one at all You're so sophisticated, I wish I could be just like you. Rolling up in your 4x4 cause you live out in the sticks When everyone knows you live half a mile from the M6 You're so sophisticated, I wish I could be just like you. Sing a song for all the semi-despatched aristocrats Getting high on getting by, nail their colours to the mast You're so sophisticated, I wish I could be just like you. La la la la la la la la la la la la la, sophisticated, sophisticated |
Info: This song started out being about a sophisticated sort of lifestyle (endulging in French wine and the like) - but as I wrote the lyrics gradually became an ironic take on people who think they are sophisticated, but really aren't. The sort of people who buy classic novels just to put them on the shelf and drive 4x4s that never go a near a bit of mud. As if to prove the frivolity of it all the song ends with "la la la la la la la la sophisticated" - sung by my brother Josh and myself. The percussion is me slapping my thighs. |
